Sarah's father, William Nichols, purchased initial property in Columbiana Co. in 1833 and he made several trips, purchasing more land, and building a lumber mill and a gristmill before building a home and moving there in 1836. The rest of the family planned and prepared for the move for several years starting in 1827. Sarah and Lot moved to Ohio sometime between April 1832 and Aug. 1835. They were received by Plainview MM, Belmont Co., Ohio 13 Aug. 1835. Their infant son, William was born and died that year. Joseph Holmes was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio in 1836.
Sarah died 5 Sept. 1838 and is buried at the Columbiana Village Cemetery along with her father, William Nichols, stepmother, Casandra [Brown] Nichols, sister, Mrs. Mary [Nichols] Allen, and brother-in-law, Jesse M. Allen. She left her husband with three young children. Lot Holmes married a second time to Eliza Dixon 11 Jan. 1841 in Columbiana Co., Ohio and removed to Marshalltown, Marshall Co., Iowa in 1852.
