a. Note:   Arnold A. Young Mr. Arnold Andrew Young, 82, of Florence, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, at his residence.
  Arnold was born at Waterloo, Ala., on Nov. 13, 1918, the son of Andrew Young and Alice Fielder Young, long time residents of Lauderdale County.
  He attended Waterloo schools and, upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in Florence State Teachers College. His education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He was assigned to the 36th Engineers, which was an amphibious combat unit. With this group, he spent four years taking part in beach landings in Africa and Italy, including Anzio and Salerno. He later served in France and Germany until the end of World War II.
  After his military discharge, he resumed his education at the University of North Alabama where he received a B.S. degree in science and math. He continued his education at George Peabody College where he earned a masters degree in school administration and elementary school supervision.
  Mr. Young returned to Lauderdale County where he spent many years serving Lauderdale County and Florence city school systems. He held principalships at Central High School and T.M. Rogers High School before he joined Florence city school system as the first principal at Sam C. Harlan Elementary School. He spent 25 years at Harlan as principal and retired in 1978.
  Mr. Young was a member of First United Methodist Church where for many years he directed the Sunday night young people's group. He was a member of the William A. Graham Sunday School class for 45 years. For many years, he was an active member of the Florence Exchange Club and a member of the National Elementary School Principals Association.
  Mr. Young was a successful gardener, and he spent much of his leisure time in his rose garden where he grew dozens of beautiful roses. Sharing the roses with friends brought him much happiness.
  The service will be Monday, April 9, at First United Methodist Church, at 2 p.m., with Brother Leonard McDowell officiating. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Park. Elkins Funeral Home will be assisting the family.
  Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Clarita Thompson Young; a daughter, Linda Young Street and her husband, Phillip; two grandsons, Mark Phillip Street and Eric Andrew Street and his wife, Kristy; two great-grandchildren, Erica Kaitlyn and Kameron Andrew Street.
  Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Seminary St., Florence, or Hospice of the Shoals, 1106 Bradshaw Dr., Florence.
  The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Shoals and Dr. Christine Beville for their loving care.
