CERTIFICATE OF BIRTH (from Ukrainian archives, 1994): MENDEL ORECKOVSKY, b. 30 Mar 1891, Novoukrainka; father, Refuel' Avrumovich Orekhovskij; mother, Ryvka This document says that Raphael was a "Kishinevskij mestchanin", that he or his parents or grandparents were registered residents of Kishinev, far to the west in Bessarabia, now Moldova. In those days it was difficult for Jews and their families to officially change their registration documents, so they kept their old city identifications.
