From the Atascosa Co., TX history book Charles Bruce Myers was born in Colorado Co., TX on August 26, 1881. His father, Henry Bingham Myers brought his ailing wife to Texas from Rankin Co., MS in 1869, in hopes of finding a more healthful climate. Her health did not improve, however, and she died the following year. He later married Camilla Phoebe Allen, daughter of Eliza [Woolsey] and John L. Allen, Georgia settlers in Texas and farming people. Henry and Camilla had two sons, John Henry and Bruce. Bruce graduated from high school and attended business school in Colorado Co. It is not known exactly when or why he came to Atascosa Co., but it must have been in the early 1900's, for he married Lina McAda in the county on December 24, 1905. Lina, born on May 23, 1878 in Campbellton, was the daughter of long-time Atascosa Co. pioneers James N. and Eliza [Williams] McAda. Bruce and Lina lived in Campbellton and Jourdanton for a few years, and then moved to Poteet around 1910 or 1911. Bruce notarized the transaction of the Mumme land grant to establish the City of Poteet in 1910. He was cashier at the Farmers State Bank when it opened in 1912. In 1918, they bought land a few miles north of Poteet, where they farmed and raised chickens. Their house burned down in 1926 and they moved to Charlotte where Bruce worked for the S. Fleischmann Grocery Store. Bruce started work at the post office in 1931 and was the Postmaster for many years before his retirement in 1949 or 1950. Lina suffered a stroke in 1945 and was bed-ridden for ten years. Bruce nursed her until his death on December 31, 1952. Bruce and Lina had four children: Edgar, born on July 24, 1907; Allen, born on June 18, 1910 in Jourdanton; Camilla [Mrs. Hope Cochran] born on January 17, 1916; Woodrow, born on August 1, 1918 in Poteet. Allen met Hurstean Akers when he was nineteen. After two years of courtship they were married on January 23, 1932. They lived in Poteet and Allen farmed his father's land north of Poteet. In the mid-thirties, he started work at the post office. After several years in the main office he acquired a rural mail route in 1938, which he continued until his death. He suffered from high blood pressure and heart trouble and died in 1960 at the age of 49. Allen and Hurstean raised two daughters. Marlene [Mrs. Fred Hilgers of San Antonio] was born on December 17, 1932 and Christell [Mrs. Gerald Phillips of Pleasanton] was born on February 26, 1936. There are four grandchildren: Susan, Bruce, Jeffrey Phillips of San Antonio, and Charlene [Hill] McGuire of Houston; and two great-grandchildren, Katie and Kristie McGuire.
