Notes
a. Note:   Sources: Colonial Families of the USA; NEHGR, v14/23; Ancestral Lines Revised; Rhode Island Genealogical Register, Vol. 1, page 112. NEHGR: Ann Babcock, named in the 1685 will of her father, John Babcock. Families: Anna Babcock, sister of Col. Oliver Babcock, married Joseph Clarke of Westerly. Ancestral Lines: Ann Babcock, born about 1665. "A Potter-Richardson Memorial" has an Anna Babcock (1701-1731), daughter of Capt. James Babcock (not John and Mary Lawton Babcock), marrying Joseph Clarke. Since Anna was a second wife, she could be much younger than Joseph. But she also would be about 20 years younger than brother Oliver, born about 1683.
R.I. Genealogical Register, v4, #4, p354 (Westerly Town Records, Land Evidence No. 1, 1661-1707) has will of John Babcock, who died instestate. The town council made his will on 26 June 1685 and named daughter Ann Barber among the 10 children. It looks like Ann(a) was married to a Mr. Barber before she married Elisha Clarke after the death of his first wife in 1716. And RIGR in v1, p112: Moses Barber, born 1652--possibly the son of James Barber, born 1620, of Newport--married about 1679 an unknown first wife. She may have been the daughter Ann Barber, born 1663, mentioned in the 26 June 1685 will of John Babcock, born 1644, of Westerly. His wife, Mary, was born about 1645.
