Note: Jim was a land surveyor, as were his father, grandfather and son James (Hamish). He went overseas in the first world war in the First Division, as a private in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders. He finished the war as a cadet in the Royal Air Force (or was it the Flying Corps?). He was in the first gas attack at Ypres.
