He came to the Netherlands at an early age, as he was a good penman in the Dutch language. In Haarlem, North Holland, he was taxed in 1628. He was married 18 May 1631 in Haarlem to SARA PIETERS. Sara was baptized 18 March 1612 at Haarlem Reformed Church. She died 17 December 1634 just nine months after giving birth to her son Peter.

BARENT, his wife and children and several of his sisters came to New Amsterdam by 1654, or perhaps earlier. It is not known what ship they came on - a possibility that it was his own ship. He owned a large house just south of the Dutch Reformed Church in Flatbush (now a part of Brooklyn). He died before November 1659 when his widow married 2nd to Isaac Classen. Barent is probably buried in the Churchyard of the Dutch Reformed Church.
In 1954 there were 4,500 descendants through his four daughters and one son (known), and even more descendants through his other daughter, Catalyntie BARENTS and her husband, POULOS VAN BENTHUYSEN. ..[see Van Benthuysen Gen.]. is NOT responsible for the content of the GEDCOMs uploaded through the WorldConnect Program.
