 1859 on, Samuel A. Maxwell was only listed in 1859-1861 Nelson Co. VA Personal Property Tax records. He had one horse in 1859, one horse & 15 cattle in 1860, and 1 horse, 4 cattle, 6 sheep & & pigs in 1861. Neither he nor Susan were listed again after 1861. if he died bet. 1861-1862, Susan would not have been listed if they did not own land nor have a son age 16 or older. I did not find any wills or deeds for Samuel Maxwell.
  There is one S. A. Maxwell listed as a Confederate in the Civil War. He was in the 1st Battalion, Virginia Reserves, Co. B, as a Private. Also listed in the 1st VA Reserves, as a Private. Both are listed on the same roll below which I will need to follow up on.

 Possibly Civil War or Typhoid Fever.
