While only 17 years old, he enlisted in the 41st Volunteers of
Ohio under General James A. Garfield. After serving in the Civil War
he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he married Mary Leavy,
the 15th of October. Four years later being attracted by
reports of the Great Northwest they journeyed to Bitter Root Valley
near Missoula, Montana. There he founded a home in what is now the
town of Carlton. They endured all the hardships incident to Montana
Pioneering; Indians, the elements, and all the early drawbacks. He
 was considered a foremost figure, a clean-cut right-minded citizen
of whom the State may be proud.
