Note: Mary fell foul of British law when she was 21 years old. She was tried at York, England on 22nd October 1829 for stealing 2 silk handkerchiefs and sentenced to 14 years transportation to the Australian colony of Van Diemens Land. Mary arrived at Hobart town on 9th May 1831 aboard the convict ship "AMERICA".
She could read and write and her jail report stated she was "BAD" but on the journey over she was reported to be "VERY GOOD".
Mary was 5 feet 1 inches tall.
Within her first 7 months of arriving she met John Stoneham who applied for permission to marry her. This was granted and they married on 27th February 1832. Mary and John had 8 children but 3 of these died before reaching age 2.
