Note: R. S. Telford database George's birth date of 16 Aug 1833 was recorded by Edna Alderman Telford from verbal accounts by George Stainton Telford. The date was also verified by the "1813-1828 BMD Cockermouth" book in Carlisle archives, which noted his parents to have been: "Mary McAdam, "spinster," meaning "not married," and Joseph Telford "blacksmith" of Cockermouth." Granddad TELFORD lists his parents' marriage as 11 NOV 1832. LDS, IGI lists their son George as "George McAdam or Telford" (inferring that his mother was NOT married) and states that George was born 17 Feb 1834. (Less likely) George became a shoemaker. 1881 British Census notes George is 48 and was born in Bolton, Cumberland. He and Margaret lived on Main Street (49 Outrigg Place?) with daughter Mary Elizabeth who was 12 at the time. Also in the house was Eliza McGaevie, age 46, a widow from Ireland. A card from George's daughter, Mary Elizabeth, dated 27 Nov. 1910 indicates they were living in Gospel End in that year.
