  "Isaac Connely...His name appears in the list of taxibles in the Middle Ward, city of Philadelphia, 1780; value of estates: $28,000 (I suppose in Continental money)...He kept the 'Black Horse' Inn on Market Street...This was the street on which George Washington lived and he knew him well. Washington presented him with a cane and a picture, painted in Ireland; these are now in the possession of his gr.gr.granddaughter, Mrs E F Kerwick, of Portland, New York. In all deeds signed by him he wrote his name Connely but many of his descendants spell it Connelly."   "Isaac Connely was a very early settler in Allegheny (Township), locating in 1803...During the Revolution he lived in Philadelphia, where he kept the Black Horse tavern, a well-known hostelry...He was at one time a teacher of Latin and German and was a man of extensive reading. One of the first births of the township was that of his son, George W, afterward prothenotary, September 3, 1804. He was three times married...A clump of trees in a field on the farm of Alfred Lamb is pointed out as the Connely burying ground." (The Connely Burial Ground is located in the woods behind a hunting cabin on Cashup Road in Harmony Twp, Forest County, PA) Inscription: -"Tribute of Respect to the memory of ISAAC CONNELY who departed this life July 4, 1823 Aged 76 years. An Israelite indeed in whom was no guile."
