Age 15 in 1880 Census, Kansas, Washington County, Union Township (26 June) T9-0399, page 482B
4 September 1893, Joseph's occupation was a farmer, Mary's occupation was homemaker. Their residence was Haddam, Kansas. (Frank's Birth Certificate)
After Mary "Wheeler" Broady died, Joseph split up the family (reason remains a mystery) John E. and Frank were left with their grand parents Allen C. Wheeler. Laura was a ward of Thomas J. Nicks and his wife and she was living in Boulder, Colorado. Bertha was living with D. H. Oberhaltzer. The boys grew up in Kansas with the Wheelers, Laura grew up in Colorado and Bertha spent some time in California where she finally lived with her father. "The 1910 Census finds Joseph living in San Diego County, California with his daughter Bertha. (Elsie Broady's address book -- Mr. J.C. Broady, Otay, California." Source: "Descendents of Joseph Broady" by Darla Broady, page 457.
"The 1920 Census, Joseph is living on -- Coronado Blvd., San Diego Township, San Diego precinct. (The next people on the census are living on 4th Street. This looks to be Otay) Joseph's occupation is listed as dairy farmer, it also says that he is a renter. Also listed in the same household are William Turner age 27, a hired hand and his wife Anna E. Turner, a housekeeper." Source: "Descendents of Joseph Broady" by Darla Broady, page 457.
"In the early 1930s, Joseph lived for a time in a one room shed that was attached to a garage on one of his brother Wesley's farms. This farm was located at Bolsa/Bushard in the present town of Westminister, Orange County, California. Wesley's grandchildren, Robert and Carolyn Broady remember Joseph's room as being quite a mess. His interest was in health foods and he would give the family grains packaged in round cardboard containers, simular to breakfast food containers. He also made horhound candies that he gave to the children." Source: "Descendents of Joseph Broady" by Darla Broady, page 457.
"Joseph returned to the San Diego area, probably to be near his daughter Laura. On or about 23 December 1936, Joseph was admitted to the San Diego County Hospital. He passed away 5 January 1937. On his death certificate his place of residence was listed as Lakeside, California." Source: "Descendents of Joseph Broady" by Darla Broady, page 457.
