May 13, 1886: What we were told about Patrick Gaffney's death the year of 1886
Patrick's wife Delila Roberts Gaffney was pregnant with child. She was craving honey, so Patrick and Delila's brother William Henry Roberts, went across Pony Creek, which runs in back of the old Robert's homestead to cut a bee tree. When it fell, it fell on Patrick. William Henry couldn't get the tree off him. He told Patrick he would go for help. He brought help and a two wheel cart with him. They cut the tree off Patrick, loaded him in the cart and struck out for home. Just before they got back to Pony Creek Patrick asked them to stop. He told them all good-bye and died.
William Henry built Delila a small house on the old Roberts homestead and helped her clothe and feed the children after Patrick died. There were five children. Delila had a baby boy and named him Patrick. About five years later she married William Dease and had five more children.
Added note: The year of her death she gave birth to stillborn twins. These were the last two of the five with William Dease.
