Death notice, 22 Feb 1938, Augusta, GA: MRS. P. D. BLACK // Millett, S. C., Feb. 21 - Funeral services for Mrs. P. D. Black, 70, who died at her home near here Sunday, after an extended illness, were held in the Speedwell Methodist church at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon, with the Rev. Mr. Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the Millett cemetery. // Mrs. Black was the daughter of the late J. C. Kirkland and Sarah Barker Kirkland. // Besides her husband, Mrs. Black is survived by four children, E. J. Black, Millett; J. H. Black, New York; Miss Leize Black and Mrs. J. J. Snelling, Millett; one brother, H. C. Kirkland, Olar; and one sister, Mrs. Kate Kirkland, Millett.
Funeral notice, 23 Aug 1938, Augusta, GA: MRS. LENA K. BLACK // Allendale, S. C., Feb. 22 - Mrs. Lena Kirkland Black, 71 years of age, died Sunday afternoon, February 20, at her home in Milettville after an extended illness. // Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Speedwell Methodist church, with the Rev. Mr. Phillips officiating, assisted by Dr. W. C. Kirkland of Summerville. Interment followed in the church yard cemetery. Mrs. Black was married in this place fifty years ago. // Mrs. Black was the wife of Paul Delacy Black of Millettville and the daughter of the late James Cornelius Kirkland and Cornelia Barker Kirkland. She was born and reared in the Buford Bridge section of old Barnwell county, and was a life-long and devout member of the Methodist church. Mrs. Black was a beloved character and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. // Surviving her are her husband, two sons and two daughters, Edward Junius Black of Millettville and Miss Leize Black of Millettville; James Hammond Black of New York City; Mrs. J. J. Snelling of Millettville; one brother and one sister, Henry C. Kirkland of Olar, S. C.; and Miss Kate Dunbar Kirkland of Millettville. // Active pallbearers were: Wallace Kirkland, Willie M. Terry, W. H. Snelling, G. R. Peeples, Jack Kirkland, and J. M. Dunbar.
