Note: The first knowledge of our BAYES family is Jewel BAYES and his brother Hugh about 1755 in Somerset Co. Pennsylvania. They were of English and Scotch descent. Then about 1818 Jewel's sons John and Thomas moved their families to Holmes Co. Ohio. John was a very enthusiastic Methodist and a great admirer of John and Charles Wesley, founders of Methodism. John's home was the home of all the ministers visiting the area. He was a great leader of the church, he was always called upon to settle all the little bickerings in the neighborhood. Being a most devout Christian he spent a great deal of time visiting the sick and needy and ministering to the wants of the poor.
