Notes
a. Note:   Died Between 13 Dec 1788 and 4 Feb 1789. Captain in Army and Member of the Committee of Safety of Rowan County , North Carolina . Virginia Crilley <varcsix@hot.rr.com>7 Jan 2009 I saw your John Lewis Beard info on World Connect. Lewis Beard owned land in Rowan (now Davidson Co NC) 1783 adj to Adam Grimes on Farmer's Creek. I was curious about this Beard Family and wondered if you knew of this land. Naturalized 1755 Will C:129, Rowan Co., NC, 1789; named wife Christina; children: Valentine, Lewis, Michael, John, Christina, Catherine, Salina. From the book History of Rowan Co., NC "Before leaving these early settlers, the reader must have a special introduction to a few of them who played a more conscecuous part in public affairs. The first of these is a sturdy German, by way of Pennsylvania, and not yet naturalized. His name is JOHN LEWIS BEARD: While he lingered in Pennsylvania, Mr. Beard was married to MISS CHRISTINA SNAPP, of that Province. Coming to Salisbury, he was naturalized in 1755. While many of the German settlers, unacquainted with the English language, and therefore incapable of taking part in public affairs, were content to remain several years as aliens, and whose names therefore seldom appear on the public records. Mr. Beard, with a vigor that characterized his after life, immediately assumed his place as an active and energetic citizen. He did not at first settle within the corporate limits of the town, but opened up a farm on Crane Creek, near the Bringle's Ferry Road." Born Johann Ludwig Barth, arrived from Rotterdam in 1749. Vessel - Patience and Margaret (ref. "Carolina Cradle" by Robert W. Ramsey, UNC Press, Chapel Hill, 1964). When naturalized in 1755 he changed his name to the English version John Lewis Beard. 1756 -- John Lewis Beard, licence for Tavern (Inn - Ordinaries) Lutheren Church in Rowan Co., NC: In 1768, John Lewis Beard, member of same, bereaved by the death of a dau. and her body interred in a lot of ground owned by her father; to prevent her remains from being disturbed, Mr. Beard executed a deed for the lot -- containing 144 poles -- to the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Salisbury, allowing ministers of High Church of England to occupy it when not used by the Lutherans. This is now the Lutheran graveyard, or Salisbury Cemetery. NC State Archives Records: "Revolutionary Army accounts," Vol. I through XII, Vol A, p. 130. Voucher #8873, Salisbury District, public claim, 25 Sept. 1784, Voucher #381, Salisbury district, public claim. "Rowan County Original Estate Records, 1753 - 1929, CR 0895.508.8." John Lewis Beard, 1787." Will dated 12/13/1788 in Rowan Cty, N.C., Was naturalized in 1755 in Rowan Cty, N.C. Carolina Cradle by Robert W. Ramsey, UNC Press, Chapel Hill, l964, L.C. # 64-22530, Appendix F lists John Lewis Beard (name in Rowan records), Johann Ludwig Barth (name as it appears in Strassberger's Compilation), arrived from Rotterdam in l749. Vessel - Patience and Margaret. See also Footnote No. 84, page l65. Johan Ludwig BARTH came from Germany and settled in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC in the 1750's. His name was changed to John Lewis BEARD. He was a butcher by trade, but became a tavern owner and big land owner in Salisbury. I have lots on his family, but don't know where he came from in Germany. In Salisbury, Rowan County, NC, late 1700s there were two different families of Beards. One of German descent and one of Irish. Both familys migrated west in the same general direction. Have a lot of info on descendants of John Lewis Beard and Christina Snapp (German line) these two started out in VA before they moved to NC. Descendants went to MS and LA and points west. From Genforum, Nov. 2001: "Rowan County Heritage" at the Rowan Cty library in Salisbury, family #243: John Lewis Beard (Johann Ludwig Barth)m. Christina Schnepp, d. of Johannes and Barbara Schnepp.(AKA Snapp)
