Note: ina area and family legend has it he came seeking gold. He is first found in the 1830 census living next to Henery Delamothe at Old Town near the site of the second courthouse. 1840 Census has him with eight children, six sons and two daughters. Their names were Nathaniel-Lockey-Lewis-Massann Angline-George-Alexander L.-Wm. M."Billy"-Mary Ann. The 1850 Census has him living in Eldorado area married to Susannah Smart Morgan and he has acquired a considerable amount of land as the administration papers shown in Montgomery County Clerk of Court office. Census also shows Joel as a Blacksmith. Joel came from Chatham County NC and all of his children except Nathaniel and George are on the Montgomery County 1850. 1860 US Census Montgomery County Fork District list HH 794 Joel Henderson age 75 and a Farmer. Wm. Henderson age 23 and Margaret Hearne age 12 female. Susannah had preceded him in death and he is seventy five years old. Joel died sometime after 1869 and thought that he and Susannah are buried at the home place in Eldorado but no marker found. Census and birth dates were taken from this source. Joel fought in the War of 1812. NC Archives show he served in 7 th Regiment August 1813 North Carolina Mil. "Pearson's". A Granddaughter in 1963 advised Mrs. Annie Henderson that Joel Henderson lived in Pittsboro Chatham County North Carolina before moving to Montgomery County North Carolina.
