Notes
a. Note:   HER CHRISTIAN CHARACTER Original Manuscript Written by: Mr. Henry Ruffin Walden (Born 09 Sep 1866) Son of Anderson Walden, Sr. and Julia Ritter Walden Transcribed by: Mrs. Mary Brower Sawyer Robbins, NC Julia Walden was a woman with a strong Christian character. In all her days, there is no black spot in her character to stand on any page of her history. She was faithful as a slave, as a wife, as a mother, as a grandmother and as a great-grandmother. She lived 38 years as a widow and not one act of disgrace or dishonesty was she ever guilty. She did not desire to marry the second time, but lived all these years with and for her children and grandchildren. Her Christian character is still living in many of them today. She used to take her youngest son (who is the writer of this little pamphlet) by the hand and lead him to Sunday school every Sunday a distance of four miles. Thirty five years ago, she taught him his alphabet, the Lord's Prayer and this little prayer: Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. This I ask for Jesus sake --- Amen The words of Abraham Lincoln come in very well just here: "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe it to my mother." She was honored and respected by the white people equally as with those of her own race. It may seem strange to say this, but I have some authority. She was a midwife upward of forty years, and visited more whites than colored. They came for her with their best teams. She ate with them, in their dining rooms and slept in their best beds. They received her advice in many instances in preference to the doctor's. The writer has asked her at different times, of her treatment among the whites and she reported the best of treatment on all occasions. She was loyal to God, the Church, the Sunday school and the Christian Endeavor Society at her death. Here are the names of the twelve children telling on what branch of the "Record Tree" may be found their families and the number of children they have. In making this tree, none but children and grandchildren are taken into consideration. The husbands and wives of each are left out to the number of 68.
