The great 12th century basilica is an early example of the great gothic style that took France by storm. Most French kings and queens were buried here and although most of the remains were desecrated during the Revolution, the tomb sculptures were saved. In the town centre, the old St Denis abbey built by Louis XV and turned into a girls’ school by Napoléon now houses a museum of the town. The jeweller Charles Christofle founded his factory here in 1830, continuing a long tradition dating from Saint Eloi who started the royal gold foundry in 635. There is a museum in Rue Ambroise.
