Note: Because of family needs, William did not complete high school even though he was offered support to go to college. At the time of the 1930 census (April 15, 1930), the couple was living at 15608 Lake Shore Boulevard and he was classified as a laborer working at a wholesale store. Later he obtained a job working with the maintenance crew at the Cleveland Union Terminal. This gave the family access to free train travel between Cleveland and Ashtabula. He later took a position as an engineer at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, where he remained until about 1945. He then took a position as an insurance agent with Farm Bureau Insurance Company (which became Nationwide Insurance several years later). He was remarkably successful at it, becoming one of the top several agents in Ohio. Despite his success, he was denied the position of District Manager on the grounds that he had not gone to college. Following the death of Margaret and his marriage to Mildred, he and Mildred, with Lora, moved to Phoenix where he owned and managed, until he died, a motel on the famous Route 66.
