a. Note:   TURTLE LAKE -- John Gessele, 88, Turtle Lake, died Aug. 12, 2003, at a Turtle Lake hospital. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Turtle Lake Cemetery. Friends and Family may gather to celebrate Johnny's life at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Chapel, Turtle Lake. Johnny Gessele was born June 27, 1915, in Mercer, N.D., to Edd and Katharine (Bender) Gessele. He was raised and educated in Mercer. He married Emma Ruck on Oct. 26, 1941, at Peace Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. The couple lived and farmed four miles west of Turtle Lake for the next 48 years. They retired from the farm and moved into Turtle Lake in 1972. Johnny enjoyed repairing machinery, gardening and playing cards. Many special memories were shared playing Canasta with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed visiting and traveling with the Turtle Lake Birthday Club. Johnny was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and is remembered for his devout love of children, his wife Emma, and his Lord and Savior. John is survived by his wife, Emma Gessele, Turtle Lake; his son, Russell (Harrier) Gessele, Turtle Lake; her daughter, Sharon (Bill) Hoverson, Fargo; his grandchildren, Heather and Erin Gessele, David (Laura) and Katharine Hoverson; two sisters, Emma Hinsz and Alma Beirle, Mercer; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Herbert; and two sisters, Martha and Hilda.
