Note: d that "brother Newton" was last seen in a Civil War battle. The original of this letter may be in the Lena Wills collection in the Springfield MO library. Newton Todd of Livingston Co KY in the 1860,1870 and 1880 census is assumed to be this brother based on: 1. Newton Todd in the census was born in 1816 in Tennessee. 2. According to his 1853 marriage record, Newton's middle initial was "H". 3. His son's death certificate lists his name as "Harry" or "Henry" Newton Todd. 4. There is an "N. H. Todd" who served for the Confederacy in Company C of the 9th Kentucky Cavalry, who were recruited in Livingston County, KY. 5. Caleb Washington Todd another son of William lived briefly in LIvingston Co in 1850, but seems to have returned to Rutherford Co. 6. Newtons 1861 marriage to Nancy Bobbitt in Livingston Co KY indicates he was born in Rutherford Co TN. Most of this information came from Nathan Marks, a descendant of James Alexander Todd, son of Reuben Todd b 1785 GA. Strangely, the marriage of Newton Todd to Malissa Joiner in 1853 and to Georgiana Walker in 1869 are recorded in Pope County, Illinois. Pope County IL is right across the Ohio River from Livingston County, KY. IN 1860, his son JOhn and daughter Sanina are living with Abraham Joiner in Livingston Co KY. Abraham Joiner 54 Elizabeth Joiner 43 James Joiner 15 Catherine Joiner10 Betsey Joiner 7 John Todd 10 Sanina Todd 9 2nd marriage: 4 Aug 1853 in Livingston County to Mariah Ann Lay, the widow of Atha Evans (1850 Census) and daughter of William Lay (Death Record). Her daughter Mary's birth record proves her maiden name was Lay. She died in Feb 1857 in Livingston County (Kentucky Death Records). Note her name is spelled Mariah on 1850 Census and marriage record, and spelled Maria on her death record and her daughter's birth record.
