Notes
a. Note:   her was said to be named Elizabeth and his father is unknown. He was raised by his grandmother, the widow Mary Todd 1762-1866. His grandmother cared for him until the role changed, then in turn, Walker cared for his grandmother. Walker bought land in 1847 in Cannon County near what became the town of Burt and next door to Jefferson Todd who bought land there in 1848. Walker may have lived near to Jefferson Todd in the Fox Hollow area of Rutherford County before coming to Cannon County. Walker's wife Julia Painter who he married in Rutherford County in 1849 appears to be the daughter of John Painter 1781-1851 who lived close to Jefferson Todd in the Fox Hollow area in 1840. The other evidence for Walker being closely associated with Jefferson is in the 1830 census. Family historians have asserted that the Mary Todd b 1762 (Walker's grandmother) was the Mary Todd in the 1830 census born 1770-80 with male children born 1810-15 (possibly Jefferson), 1820-25 (possibly Walker) and 1825-30 (unknown) along with a woman 1800-1810. This is definitely a possibility. If so, then the young woman in the household could have been Walker's mother or Jefferson's mother or the mother of the youngest boy. Walker first married Julianna Painter 12 April 1849 in Rutherford County. The couple along with Mary Todd b 1764 NC. Julianna died shortly after the 1850 Census Schedule was taken. Walker married for the second time to Elvira Frances Haynes 5 March 1855. In the year of 1863, Tennessee was drawn into the Civil War. Walker,at the age of 43, enrolled in Company A-18-Regt, Capt. M. B. Rushings Company, Tennessee Volunteers at McMinnville on January 10, 1863. He was detailed as a nurse at the hospital in Ringold, GA. Walker was also assigned for extra duties at the Ford's Hospital August 8, 1863. He served 31 days at $.25 per day. He was paid a total of $15.25 for his services. On January 15, 1865, Walker was admitted to the hospital for disabilities and, on April 14, 1865, was sent to C.S.A. General Hospital No 11,Charlotte, NC. At the end of the war, Walker, at age 43, was administered the Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America at Chattanooga, TN. At this time, a description of him was given as living in Cannon County Tennessee, dark complexion, grey hair, greyeyes, and 5'11" tall. Walker returned to his home and resumed his farming operation. He and Elvira had ten children: Mary Jane, Stephen Alexander, Abner Newton,Archibald Jasper, Martha Frances, Walker Everett, Asa Benjamin, SarahElizabeth, Ivy John Creel, and Cora Alice. They also reared a granddaughter Nellie Lee Todd, the daughter of their son Walker. In 1869, Mary Todd, widow of Granville, conveyed 65 acres to Walker Todd in Cannon County, located on Carson's Fork of Stones River, southside of Petty Gap Road on James Todd's corner. This James Todd is presumably the James B. Todd b 1788 NC who got a grant in the area in 1831. This James Todd is not from the same Todd family as Walker Todd. Walker and Elvira continued living on the farm until their deaths.Grandmother Mary died in 1866, Elvira in 1904 and Walker died in 1906.They lie resting in the Todd Cemetery, located on the hillside of the family farm just a few yards from where their frame dwelling house stood. Their memories will long remain in the hearts of those who loved them. (story recd from Juanita Burks) See discussions under his mother Elizabeth and grandmother Mary for possible links to Benjamin Todd b 1759, who may be his grandfather. DNA samples done in 2011 have the potential to both determine his father and determine the parents of Mary Todd. See DNA report for details on this.
Note:   Walker Todd was born May 5, 1822 most likely in Tennessee, according to the census. His mot
