a. Note:   A negro Nanny helped raise L. T. Foster. His father was a slave owner. L. T. Foster ran away from home at the age of sixteen and came to Shelby county around Timpson, Texas. When L. T. Foster's mother died, she left a large sum of land to him and his sister Jane. L. T. Foster and Jane were the two youngest of her children. Grandma Pinson (as some knew her) was L. T.'s mother-in-law. Elizabeth Purett Foster (1st wife of L. T. Foster) died giving birth to their eighth child Jessie. Aunt Callie Purett took Jessie when she was three days old. After Elizabeth died in 1871, L. T. was left with four living children. Three years later, at the age of 45, L. T. Foster married Martha Ann Ward, age 25, in the year 1874. He remarried and had more children. Sixteen in all from both marriages. Not all of them lived. e-mail from Robbie Finley 10-5-1999 According to the notes I found, Lewis Thomas Foster's grandmother was one half Indian. He served in the civil war four years.
