Note: The Atlas of Wellington Co. 1906 shows his name as Thomas McCrea. There is stronger evidence to suggest that his name was actually, David McCrae. (Reported in Ayr Advertiser - 18 Jul 1878) At London Road, Guelph, Ontario on the 22nd June, David McCrae aged 78 a native of Carsphairn, Kirkudbrightshire. In 1849, David and his wife Marion sailed down to Liverpool on the "Countess of Galloway." They were accompanied by their son Thomas and his wife Jean Campbell, and their children - David, three and Margaret, one. At Liverpool they boarded the ship "Empress" for the long and arduous voyage across the Atlantic. Conditions were so bad that at one point the ship's officers had to quell a mutiny by the steerage passengers. There was a scourge of small pox and other hardships. Thomas & Jean had a baby girl born aboard ship, but she lived only ten days and was buried at sea. The family finally arrived in New York, eventually settling in Ontario, Canada.
