George Frederick Schmidt: Birth: 1866. Death: 4 FEB 1939
Note: Farmed at lot 15, con. 3, Arthur Twp. "In Mount Forest, on Wednesday October 12th, there passed peacefully away to his reward, at the home of his son, John Frederick Schmidt, who had reached the ripe old age of eighty-eight years and seven months. At the age of thirteen years he, with his parents emigrated from Baden-Baden, Germany, to Hastings County, where they settled near Trenton where, attaining the age of manhood, he married Frances Epoch, who predeceased him about six years ago. In the year 1875, he, with his family, moved to Arthur Township where he farmed successfully for many years. Deceased was a man of sterling honesty and ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need; a kind and loving father to his children. He leaves to mourn his loss five sons and six daughters, namely: John and Mrs. George Lang, of Mount Forest; Mrs. Emma Stortz; Mrs. Richard Cantlon, Egremont; Mrs. Oscar Goetz, Joseph and David, of Arthur Twp; George in Detroit; Mrs. L. Miller, Mrs. F. Faulkes and Henry in Western Canada. There are also eighty-eight grandchildren and seventy great grandchildren. The funeral which was largely attended, took place on Friday morning, the 14th, the cortege first moving to St. Mary's R.C. Church, Mt. Forest, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Mlone, thence to the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Kenilworth. The pall bearers were his grandsons: Frederick Goetz, Elmer Schmidt, Daniel and Frederick Cantlon, James and Frederick Stortz. Once again the grave closes over one of the brave pioneers who did his full share in building up our country. May their names be ever revered and blessed." [Mount Forest Confederate, Oct 27, 1927]
