Sylvester Patrick Garvey: Birth: 5 FEB 1906 in Egremont Twp, Grey Co, Ontario. Death: 30 NOV 1977 in St Joseph's Hospital, Guelph, Wellington Co, Ontario, Canada
Note: John & Alice originally lived on the 15th of Normanby Township in Grey County. 1921 census shows them there. They moved to Lot 15, WOSR, Arthur Twp, sometime before 1923. Their youngest child, Margaret, attended Sacred Heart School in Kenilworth in 1923. Mount Forest Confederate reported a barn fire at John Garvey's farm at Kenilworth, Sept-1933. John & Alice may have been leasing the land from Michael Shaughnessy, son of Mary Ann Victoria O'Donnell, the original owner, whom was granted Lot 15 (50 acres) in 1841 by the Crown for being the first pioneer baby born in Arthur Twp. Two acres of Lot 15 were donated by Mary Ann's father, Bryan O'Donnell, for the first Catholic church & cemetery in the community. The church was built in 1851 and used until the first Sacred Heart Church was built in Kenilworth around 1903. The last known burial at Lot 15 was Elizabeth Finucan, March 3, 1960. The cemetery fell into disuse after that. In 1971 it was restored to the state we find it in today. It is now called, "The Kenilworth Pioneer Catholic Cemetery". The book, "History of Arthur Township", claims John Garvey purchased Lot 15 in 1936. In 1937, John & Alice retired to William Street, Mount Forest leaving the farm in the hands of their son, Sylvester Garvey & his wife, Theresa Houlihan. Sylvester bought the farm from his father and farmed there until 1961 when he sold it to Tom Price. Lot 15 has had numerous owners since that time. Some have been, Percival Jeffery, Bert Moore, Lawrence Bigley, Walter Budden and David Plomin. "The death of John Garvey at his home on William Street on Friday, December 30, removed a respected citizen. He had been living retired in town for the past two years and was well-known in Normanby and Aurther Townships, where he had farmed almost all his life. He had been in poor health for several months. Mr. Garvey, the last member of his family, was born in Normanby in 1860, a son of Michael Garvey and Johanna Schaw. In 1887 he was married at Ayton to Alice Taylor, who survives, together with four sons: John, of Hamilton; Ambrose, of Normanby; Michael and Sylvester, of Arthur Township; and three daughters: Ida, Mrs. John McIntee, Ayton; Mary, Mrs. Thomas O'Connell, of Kenilworth; and Margaret, Mrs. Edward McKeown, of Elora. There are also 25 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. The funeral took place on Monday morning at 9 o'clock to St Mary's Church, Mt. Forest, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father T. P. Doyle, assisted by Rev. Father Day. Interment took place in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Kenilworth. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. Father James A. Kirby, of Kenilworth.
