Note: John was appointed an officer in the militia at an early age, he also served as one of the selectman of the town of Yarmouth for many years. In 1668, he was chosen to represent the town to the General Court, and continued to do so until 1683, with the exception of 1672. He was chosen for the council of war in 1681 and continued in that capacity for several years. Immediately after the union of Plymouth colony with the province of Massachusetts Bay , under the charter of William and Mary, in 1692, John was elected a member of the provincial council, and continued in that position for twenty years. He held the rank of Colonel and was buried with military honors. Family tradition tells us that following the death of his first wife, John married Lydia Gorham who was born on their wedding day. The newlyweds had stopped at the Gorham home when Lydia was three weeks old and taking her in his arms, John presented her to Mrs. Thatcher saying, " Here, my dear, is a little lady born on the same night that we were married. I wish you would kiss her, as I intend to have her for my second wife." To accomplish this , he displaced his son , Peter, who was courting Lydia at the time, supposedly offering him ten pounds, old tenor, and a yoke of black steers if he would resign his claims on her. Tradition does not say whether Peter was an obedient son or whether the father succeeded in spite of his rival. Four months after Rebecca's death, at which time he wrote three hundred twenty-two lines concerning his loss, John married Lydia Gorham. Buried Yarmouth Cem, Yarmouth, Ma.
