Note: Jabez married about 1676 a widow, Hannah (Sturgis) Gray, who was born about 1654, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Hinckley) Sturgis. Hanna's first husband, whom she married about 1670, was John Gray, by whom she had one son, John Gray. Hannah died in Hartwich, Massachusetts, October 17, 1736, and was buried in the Old Burial Ground, Brewster, Massachusetts, called 'wife of Jabez Gorham.' Jabez served in King Philip's War, in which he was wounded. His name is on a list of townsmen inYarmouth in 1679. In 1680 he was a constable and in 1683 he took the freeman's oath and served on the Grand Inquest. At about this time Jabez settled at Papasquash Neck on one hundred acres of land granted to the estate of his father, Capt. John Gorham, for his service in King Philip's War. The land seems to have belonged to his brother, Shubael Gorham, who sold it to Nathaiel Byfield of Bristol, Feb. 7, 1689/90 for L62. Jabez registered his earmark for cattle and swine in Bristol, June 30, 1683. He was living in Bristol in August 1691 where he was called a carpenter when he bought land.
