a. Note:   Herbert A. Steilen was born on January 17, 1933 in Farmer, South Dakota, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Schladweiler) Steilen. He died on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, in Goodyear, Arizona at the age of 71 years. Herbert grew up on the family farm and entered the United States Army in 1953, serving in Germany. He was united in marriage to Shirley "Theresa" Maher in 1957. After their marriage, they lived on farms near Mitchell and Madison, SD until moving with his family to Phoenix, AZ in 1963. Herbert was employed for 30 years for the Salt River Project in Phoenix. He was a member of the Goodyear VFW and enjoyed target practice, fishing and especially spending time with family and friends. Herbert is survived by seven children, Heidi Fillmore (Kerry) of Pueblo, CO, Geordie Steilen (Sherri) of Billings, MT, Amanda Steilen of Brookings, SD, Edie Messina (John) of Clearlake, UT, Susannah Lindquist (Dean) of Flagstaff, AZ, John Steilen (Rebecca) of Marshall, MN, and Mathew Steilen of Rives Jct, MI; 16 grandchildren; three brothers, Edward Steilen and Clarence Steilen of Alexandria, SD, and Bernard Steilen of Prescott Valley, AZ; three sisters, Julie Wagner of Alexandria, SD, Dorothy Brown of Spencer, SD and Lori Anton of Palm Desert, CA. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Rose Marie Thompson. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at St. Mary of Mercy's Catholic Church, Alexandria, SD, with Fr. Ed Pierce officiating. Memorial services were held on Monday, October 11, 2004, at 9 a.m. at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Goodyear, AZ.
