a. Note:   Basil P. Zens, 71, died Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Risen Savior Catholic Church, Brandon, SD, with interment at St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Basil Paul Zens, son of Paul and Christine (Gassman) Zens, was born January 14, 1932 at Canova, SD, where he grew up and received his education. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 12, 1952. Basil served as a dispersing officer overseas during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, Basil farmed near Epiphany, SD for two years, after which he owned and operated a service station in Corson, SD. Basil married Patricia A. Simmons on October 7, 1961 at Epiphany. After their marriage the couple made their home at Corson. In the 1960's, Basil sold the service station. He then operated Zens Wholesale, which he eventually sold to Queen City Wholesale. Basil continued to work as a salesperson for Queen City until his retirement. Pat preceded Basil in death on June 23, 1982. He later married Goldie (Kelly) Hoss on June 14, 1985 in Spirit Lake, IA. In retirement, Goldie and Basil operated BG's Fretwork from their home in Corson. Basil was a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and on the liturgy committee for many years. He was a member and past Commander of the Brandon V.F.W. and an active member of the Garretson American Legion. Basil was a member of the Loyal Order of Foresters; was a past Chairman of the Corson Water Association; was a former Brandon Township Board Supervisor; and was a past Grand Marshall of the Brandon Loyalty Day Parade. Survivors include his wife, Goldie Zens, Brandon, SD; 12 children, Jolene (Rick) Silvernagel, Rapid City, SD, Daniel (Shelly) Zens, Brandon, SD, Deborah Zens, Rapid City, SD, Janelle (David) McLean, Sherman, CT, Gail (Ken) Doyle, Norwalk, CT, Mark (Monica) Zens, Hartford, CT, Duane (Sara) Zens, Madison, SD, Cheryl (Steve) Duhn, Spirit Lake, IA, Julie Fadoir, Somerset, WI, Lisa (Rick) Kulow, Algona, IA, Mark (Kris) Hoss, Spirit Lake, IA, Barbie (Roland) Schmidt, Okoboji, IA; 25 grandchildren; one brother, Vernon (Shirley) Zens, Epiphany, SD; three sisters, Irene (Julian) Beatch, Epiphany, SD, Dolores Nopens, Mitchell, SD, and Shirley Paradeis, Epiphany, SD. In addition to his wife, Pat, Basil was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Hoss; one granddaughter, Rebeca Silvernagel; three brothers, Clarence, Walter, and Raymond; and one sister, Helen Miller.
