Note: Former Mitchell area resident Norma Jean Carlson Slattery has died in a Mesa, Arizona hospital of lung problems. Mrs. Slattery, who lived at Mitchell, Spencer, Vermillion and Sioux City during her 74 years of life retired to Arizona in 1974 and lived eight years in Tempe, AZ before moving to Mesa, AZ in 1982. She died October 14, 1998. Born at Mitchell, SD in 1924 to farmers who lived in Prosper Township many years, Norma attended Sand Elm Elementary School and Mitchell High School before the family moved to Spencer, SD in 1940 where Norma graduated from Spencer High School in 1941. She worked in Chicago until 1944 when she married Spencer resident William W. Slattery who was in the United States Navy during World War II. Norma's parents, Maurice and Mabel Carlson, a brother Dr. Willard Carlson of Mitchell, and a sister, Harriet Carlson Carlson, preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons; Michael Q. Slattery of Vermillion, SD; and Richard A. Slattery, Anchorage, Alaska; three daughters, Susan Perdue of White Mountain Lake, Arizona; Sally Kenner, Las Vegas, Nevada; and Lori Slattery, Mesa, Arizona; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, three sisters, Hazel Cook of Fallon, Nevada; Lorraine Lease of San Antonio, Texas; and Karen Carlson of Denver, Colorado; one brother, Maurice Carlson Jr., Centuria, Wisconsin. Funeral arrangements are pending. Burial will be at Mitchell, SD.
