Note: Funeral services for Eugene C. "Tuffy" Painter were held February 16, 2001 in St. John's Lutheran Church, Montrose, SD. Burial was in the Montrose cemetery. The Pallbearers were Tuffy's grandsons, Scott Christensen, Lyle Christensen, Michael Painter, David Painter, Steven Hoff, and Edward Hoff. The Montrose American Legion Post provided military honors at the cemetery. Eugene C. "Tuffy" Painter was born August 10, 1916 in Hurley, SD to Richard and Theda Marie (Hoiten) Painter. He grew up in several communities in southeastern South Dakota. In December of 1941 he joined the US Navy. He was a member of the first unit of Sea Bee's formed during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific in the New Hebrides Islands, the Soloman Islands, and later in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He left the Navy in 1945 and returned to South Dakota. He married Lauretta Christensen at Montrose, SD on March 29, 1944. He lived and farmed on the same farm north of Montrose since leaving the Navy in 1945. Tuffy passed away on February 13, 2001 in Sioux Valley hospital, Sioux Falls, SD, after a battle with lung cancer. He had reached the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 3 days. Survivors include his wife, Lauretta of Montrose, SD; his children, Henry Christensen and his wife Nancy of Hartford, SD; Dale Painter and his wife Nancy of Crooks, SD; Edward Painter and his wife Mary of Montrose, SD; Janice Hoff of Cumberland, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; one brother, Patrick Painter and his wife Grata of Sioux Falls, SD; and two sisters, Ollie Thomas of Sioux City, Iowa; and Theda Marie Olson of Leonard, ND. His parents, three brothers, Herman "Babe", Ed, Marvin, and an infant son, Eugene Charles, preceded him in death.
