a. Note:   John Snyders, age 81 of Larchwood, IA died Tuesday morning, November 5, 2002, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA. Funeral Mass will be 2 PM Friday at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood with burial in Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday at The Church of St. Mary with a Parish Wake Service at 7 PM. Roste Funeral Home of Larchwood is in charge of arrangements. John Henry Snyders was born May 25, 1921 at Larchwood, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Lorena (Ripperda) Snyders. He grew up in the Larchwood area and was graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1939. On September 15, 1942 he was united in marriage to Adeline LaFrenz at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood. After he and Adeline were married, John spent 3 years in the service, spending time in Germany and Japan. John and Adeline moved to their present home in 1947, raising six children. John loved baseball. Following high school, he played for the Dodgers organization and the Sioux Falls Canaries. He also played for and managed the Larchwood baseball organization for many years. John managed the team throughout the 1950's, including a South Dakota amateur championship year in 1959. Later, his boys felt fortunate to have the opportunity to play for him in 1978 when the Iowans took second in the state tourney. John spent the majority of his work life working for the Farmers Elevator in Larchwood, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed working in his garden, hobby farming and helping his children. John and Adeline were married for 59 years. For the past nine years John has been a resident of Hartley Community Memorial Health Center. Surviving John are his two sons: Doug (Debbie) of Larchwood, Don (Julie) of Garretson, SD; four daughters: Mary Ann (Larry Fernen) of Sturgis, SD, Barb (Ron McKee), Bonnie (Bob Grotwold) and Mona (Doug Stensland) all of Larchwood; eighteen grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Veronica Scholten of Dell Rapids, SD, Theresa Bruggeman of Garretson, SD; Dorothy Kelly of Sioux Falls, SD; and three brothers: Bernard of Larchwood, Iowa; Jim of Sioux Falls, SD; and Ray (Nick) of Spencer, SD. Welcoming John into heaven are his parents, wife Adeline who died on May 3, 2002 and a brother, Robert.
