Note: Frederick E. "Fred" Colwill, 79, of 4500 E. 33rd St., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. He was born May 30, 1921, on a farm near Tea, SD. He grew up in the area and worked on the family farm until he was 18, when he began work with Great Northern Railroad. He worked with the railroad until 1943, when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served with the signal corps during World War II, then moved to his mother's farm near Salem after his discharge. He married Florene Gstohl in 1947, in Salem, SD. The couple moved to Sioux Falls, where he worked in construction until 1959. He was a partner in A&C Crane Service until 1973, then returned to the construction field. He retired in 1984, then worked as a janitor at Conlin Furniture. He was a charter member of St. Lambert's Catholic Church and a lifetime member of American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Florene; three sons: Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD; James of Des Moines, Iowa; and Bradley of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter, Gayle Ann Gustafson of Yankton, SD; seven grandchildren; two brothers: George and James, both of Sioux Falls, SD and a sister, Myrtle Gudahl of Yankton, SD. Funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lambert Catholic Church with burial in St. Michael Cemetery.
