a. Note:   Funeral services for Wellington S. "Skeet" Cone were held October 1, 1997 in the Montrose United Methodist Church, Montrose, SD. Rev. Lyle Meester officiated. Burial was in the Montrose Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Montrose American Legion Post. Pallbearers were Skeet's grandsons: Ron Cone, Jr., David Hoiten, Craig Cone, Nathan Cone, Mike Cone, Jason Terwillinger, Bradley Cone, Matthew Cone, Brian Brasel, and Doug Hoiten. Wellington S. Cone, son of Wellington and Ella (Anderson) Cone was born September 22, 1920 in Montrose, SD. He grew up and attended school in Montrose through the eighth grade. On March 4, 1940 he married Katherine Olson in Luverne, Minnesota. He served in the US Army during WW II. After the war he returned to Montrose where he worked as an auto mechanic for Griff's Service and later for the Standard Station in Salem. He also did some carpenter work. He moved to Spencer, SD in 1976 and retired in 1978. During his life time he enjoyed hunting with his sons. He also loved to swim in the pool at Montrose. Skeet had been in failing health the past several years and he died at his home in Spencer , SD on September 27, 1997. He had reached the age of 77 years and 5 days. Survivors include his wife of Spencer, SD; eight sons, Ronald and wife Chris of Salem, SD; Gary and wife Wanda of Sioux Falls, SD; Clinton and wife Kim of Linwood, Nebraska; Kenny and wife Diane of Freemont, Nebraska; Jeff and wife Sandy of Sioux Falls; Harold and wife Sandy, Gerald and wife Chris, and Brad and wife Marla all of Freemont, Nebraska; five daughters, Mary Jo Hoiten and Mrs. Johnie (Sandy) Howard, both of Spencer, SD; Mrs. Butch (Jane) Brasel of Salem, SD; Mrs. Ed (Cindy) White of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Mrs. Scott (Marcia) Tuschen of Ames, Nebraska; 41 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one sister, Inez Kruse of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant daughters, one brother, one sister, one grandson, and one great granddaughter.
