a. Note:   Salem Special, Salem, SD Aug. 1, 1996 Funeral services for Joe Gapp were held July 30, 1996 in Salem United Church, Salem. Rev. Lyle Meester officiated at the service. Burial was in Wildwood Cemetery, Salem. Active pallbearers were Eldon Gapp, Jim Gapp, Jack Gapp, Pat Reynolds, Roger Reynolds, and Jim Reynolds. Joe Gapp was born April 26, 1939 in Sioux Falls, SD to Merwin and Margaret (Janisch) Gapp. He moved with his family to the Salem, SD area when he was an infant. He attended country school and graduated from Salem High School in 1957. After high school he worked for several years at the Salem Dairy and also served in the National Guard for a time. He started to work part time at the Salem Post Office in 1958 and continued to work there until retiring in 1993. Joe moved into Salem in 1966 after his father died. He married Cheryl Peterson on September 28, 1974 at Salem United Church. In 1979 he and Cheryl bought Melody Lanes in Salem. They operated the lanes until selling the business in 1995. Joe passed away on July 27, 1996 in Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD after a struggle with cancer. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of Salem; one daughter, Denise Gapp of Salem, SD; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Smith of Valley Springs, SD; and a host of nieces and nephews.
