Note:   Remsen Bell-Enterprise, Remsen, Iowa, Thursday, May 28, 1942 ** Funeral services were held Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church for Mrs. Catherine Kirpes, resident here for 37 years, who passed away at her home last Thursday morning following a long period of illness with a heart ailment. Services were conducted by the pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Schemel, and were largely attended. Pall bearers were the following nephews of the deceased: Leo Spielman, Peter and Joe Lanners, Math Burggraff and John and Fred Heidesch. Mrs. Kirpes, nee Heidesch, was born August 9, 1867 in Bachleiden, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and came to this country at an early age. She came to Remsen where she had relatives and old country friends, and here was united in marriage in 1889 to Martin Lanners. The marriage took place in St. Mary's Church and was performed by the late Rev. F.X. Schulte. After a short period of farming here, Mr. and Mrs. Lanners settled on a farm near Hartford, SD where Mr. Lanners passed away in 1904. Soon thereafter Mrs. Lanners with her family returned to Remsen, and the esteemable lady spent the rest of her life among her many friends here. On November 26, 1912 Catherine Lanners became the wife of Nicholas Kirpes, an old resident here, and the family spent many years on the farm, working hand in hand successfully and gaining a wide and favorable acquaintance. Mr. Kirpes passed away August 5, 1941. Mrs. Kirpes was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and a staunch member of St. Mary's congregation. For many years she was a devout member of the Christian Mothers Society, members of which attended her funeral in a body. She was a devoted wife and mother, a friend who was ever welcome among her associates, and a lady who held the highest respect of everyone who knew her. Her passing was a source of keen regret among her many friends and a heartrending blow to the family.
