a. Note:   Article from "Canistota -- Our Heritage and History 1884-1984", published on the occasion of the Centennial of the City of Canistota, South Dakota in July 1984. John E Hoiten was born in Germany on May 13, 1855. He attended school and became a land surveyor. In 1882 he came to the United States and settled in Arcadia, Iowa where he met Theda Buss who he married on April 8, 1882. Theda Buss, who was born in Germany on June 8, 1856, immigrated to the United States with her parents. Their first son, Edward H. Hoiten, was born in Arcadia, Iowa. The Hoiten's came to McCook County, South Dakota in the spring of 1883 where they farmed south of Canistota, South Dakota. John Hoiten was also Deputy State Surveyor. They had ten children. Their children were: Patrick, Herman, Olive, Edward, Eugene, and Theda Marie. Hannah Hoiten (1887-1958) married Louie Rabenberg. Their children were: Ted, Leonard (now deceased), La Berts, Clarence, and Calvin (now deceased). Minnie Hoiten (1889-1960) married Ufke Vanninga. Their children were: Etta, Clifford, Richard, and Dale. Mattie Hoiten (1891-1979) married Elkie Wieman. Their children were: Hilbert, Florence, Earl, and Theresa. John J. Hoiten (1893-1973) married Maggie Noteboom. Their children were: Raymond, Morris, Irene, and Vera. Raymond and Morris are deceased. Rose Hoiten (1895-1969) married Tom McAllister. Their children were: Gladys, Ardelle, Duane, and Lyle (now deceased). Herman "Pete" Hoiten (1897-1982) married Mabel Witrock. Gertrude Hoiten (1899-1959) married Joe Wagner. Emma Hoiten (1902-1974) married Herman Witrock. Their children were: Lester, Luverne, and Norma Jean. According to the Canistota Clipper, John Hoiten resigned as County Surveyor in 1914. John Hoiten died February 8, 1929. Theda Hoiten died February 16, 1908.
