a. Note:   Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota, November 11, 1971 ** Funeral Mass was held on Nov 6, 1971 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem for Mary P. Schallenkamp. Father Leo Popichal officiated; the burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Salem. Pallbearers were six nephews, Alvin Miller, Ralph Schallenkamp, Ed Schallenkamp, Joe Schallenkamp, Henry Gottlob, and Harold Heumiller. Mary P. Schallenkamp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schallenkamp, was born in Germany on Jan 16, 1898. She came to the United States in 1900 and settled on a farm near Salem. She attended school at Salem, and following her graduation, she entered nurse's training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell, SD. She received her 50 year pin from St. Joseph's Hospital in August of 1971. Following her graduation from St. Joseph's Hospital, Miss Schallenkamp worked in Army Hospitals in Johnson City, Tennessee; St. Petersburg, Florida; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Excelsior Springs, Missouri. She retired in 1958 and moved back to Salem, where she has since lived. She passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell, SD on Nov 4, 1971 at the age of 73 years. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anton (Katherine) Gottlob, Salem, SD; two brothers; Anthony Schallenkamp, Deadwood, SD; and Herman Schallenkamp, Salem, SD.
