a. Note:   Bernice McCormick, age 91, of Salem, SD died Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Margaret Bernice Mumm, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Gau) Mumm, was born March 17, 1913 on the family farm near Geddes, SD. She attended St. Anne's School in Geddes but finished her senior year in Westphalia, Iowa while caring for her aging grandparents. After graduation, she worked for the Alexandria Herald in Alexandria, SD and the Bridgewater Tribune in Bridgewater. While working in Bridgewater, she met Vincent McCormick and they were married on June 8, 1936 in St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Bridgewater. They lived for a short time in Marion, SD and Tracy, MN. In 1943, they moved to Salem, SD where she spent the rest of her life. Her husband died in 1965. After her husband's death, she continued to work part-time at the Salem Special. She was appointed McCook County Auditor and then was elected to that position where she served two terms. She retired in 1975. She had lived in her own home until November 23, 2004 when she fell. She then entered Beverly Healthcare Center in Salem for restorative care. She is survived by her children, James of Kansas City, MO; Janice and husband, Bob Workman, of Sioux Falls, SD; Patricia Dickey of Falls Church, VA; Kathleen and husband, Leo Costello, of Narragansett, RI; Maureen and husband, Roger Feterl, of Salem, SD; and John D. and wife, Carol, of Salem, SD; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Freida and husband, Otto Tronvald, of Geddes, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers, Fred, Greg, and Ralph, her sisters, Agnes, Til, and Dot, and her daughter-in-law, Beverly. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Salem, of the Church Altar Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, the Christian Mothers, and the Salem American Legion Auxiliary. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, with burial in the church cemetery.
