Note: The funeral Mass for Benedict N. Scheier was March 6, 2000 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, SD. Fr. Joseph Ripp celebrated the Mass. Lectors were Larry Brake and Jenny Charvat. Gift bearers were Rebecca Scheier, Britany Scheier, and Jill Scheier. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Don Sabers, Clete Heumiller, Gene Rotert, James Rayman, Joe Koch, Bill Leuhn, and Harold Stiefvater. Active Pallbearers were Michael Scheier Jr., William Fisher Jr., Tom Fisher, Patrick Fisher, Nicholas Knudson, and Tom Scheier Jr. The Salem American Legion Post provided graveside military honors. Benedict N. Scheier was born May 24, 1917 on a farm near Salem, SD to George and Margaret (Wethor) Scheier. He grew up and attended school in the Salem area. He served in the Army during W.W.II, participating in campaigns from North Africa to Berlin, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Purple Heart Recipient. After the war he returned to the Salem area. He married Mary Oligmueller at Miller, SD on April 30, 1946. He farmed all his life in the Salem area. Ben passed away on March 3, 2000, of an apparent heart attack, at his farm home near Salem, SD. He had reached the age of 82 years, 9 months and 9 days. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, SD, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Salem, SD; 7 sons, Michael and his wife Patti of Phoenix, Arizona; Thomas and his wife Mary Ann of Sioux Falls, SD; Lawrence of Denver, Colorado; John and his wife Deb of Salem, SD; Pat and his wife Dawn of Salem, SD; Robert and Paul of Denver, Colorado; 4 daughters, Kathleen and husband Bill Fisher of Omaha, Nebraska; Jeanette and husband Rick Francis of Plymouth, Minnesota; Marie and husband Dan Chavat of Omaha, Nebraska; Carolyn and husband Larry Brake of Aurora, Colorado; 22 grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Eileen Scheier of Salem, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son James, 2 brothers, Joe and Ed, and 4 sisters, Florence Krantz, Georgianna Lunders, Sr. Marcine, and an infant sister. The family requests memorials to St. Mary's Grade School, Salem, SD.
