a. Note:   ARTICLE TAKEN FROM "100 YEARS OF FAITH 1885-1985" PUBLISHED BY ST MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, SALEM, SOUTH DAKOTA IN 1985. BROTHER BERNARD WAS BORN IN SALEM ON APRIL 15, 1903 TO MARTIN AND ANNA SCHEIER. ENCOURAGED BY HIS FIVE SISTERS WHO BELONGED TO THE MILWAUKEE FRANCISCANS AND BY HIS BROTHER, FR. NICHOLAS SCHEIER, BROTHER BERNARD ENTERED ST BEDE ABBEY IN 1925 AND PROFESSED HIS FIRST VOWS AS A BROTHER ON AUGUST 15, 1926. HE WAS ASSIGNED TO THE POWER HOUSE, AND WAS ENGINEER IN CHARGE OF THE BOILERS AND HEATING EQUIPMENT AND THE ELECTRICAL GENERATORS. HE WAS THE PLUMBER, ELECTRICIAN AND THE REPAIRMAN OF THE COMMUNITY. BECAUSE OF FAILING HEALTH, BROTHER BERNARD WAS FORCED TO RETIRE IN 1967 AND THAT FALL HE ENTERED ST JOSEPHS NURSING HOME IN LACON WHERE HE DIED AT THE AGE OF 73 ON MAY 24, 1976.
