Note: Article taken from "100 years of Faith 1885-1985" published by St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, South Dakota in 1985. Joe Huls was born November 4, 1908 in rural Salem. He married Gladys O'Neil June 5, 1939 at St. Mary's Church. Monsignor Weber baptized, confirmed and married them. Joe attended St. Mary's boarding school, served as an acolyte, was a Forester member, ushered, acted on various boards and was a willing worker in the parish. Gladys was a five year member of the first parish lay board, organist for many years, held different offices in the Altar Society, member of lady Foresters, Christian Mothers, worked two years in the school office and seven years as a teachers-aid in the grade school. Their six children attended St. Mary's grade and high school until it closed in 1969. After Joe Huls died, Gladys married Joe's brother, Barney Huls, whose wife had previously died.
