Notes
a. Note:   ARTICLE TAKEN FROM "100 YEARS OF FAITH 1885-1985" PUBLISHED BY ST MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, SALEM, SOUTH DAKOTA IN 1985. MR AND MRS WILLIAM HULS WERE FAITHFUL MEMBERS OF ST MARYS PARISH, HAVING WATCHED IT GROW FROM A LITTLE BODY OF CHURCH MEMBERS WITHOUT A CHURCH BUILDING TO A CONGREGATION OF OVER 400 FAMILIES. IN FACT, WHEN WILLIAM CAME TO SALEM AT THE AGE OF 11 YEARS, THERE WERE BUT 14 MEMBERS IN THE PARISH AND THE CHURCH SERVICES WERE CONDUCTED BY VISITING PRIESTS IN THE OLD CITY HALL WHERE HE SERVED MASS ON MANY OCCASIONS. WILLIAM HULS, SON OF MR AND MRS MAURICE HULS WAS BORN MARCH 24, 1870 IN WEST HOLLANDSTOWN, WISCONSIN, AND HE DIED JANUARY 27, 1958. AS A YOUNG CHILD THE FAMILY MOVED TO CARROLL COUNTY, IOWA AND FROM THERE TO SALEM IN 1881. AT THAT TIME HIS FATHER HOMESTEADED ON THE FORMER HENRY KOLBECK FARM, THREE MILES NORTH OF SALEM. HE BROUGHT HIS FAMILY TO THEIR NEW HOME. THE WILLIAM HULS HOME WAS FOUR MILES NORTH AND TWO EAST OF SALEM. WILLIAM LIVED WITHIN TWO MILES OF THE FAMILY HOMESTEAD UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT ON NOVEMBER 1944, WHEN HE AND ANNA MOVED TO SALEM WHERE THEY LIVED UNTIL HIS DEATH. ANNA LUNDERS, DAUGHTER OF MR AND MRS JOHN LUNDERS WAS BORN FEBRUARY 7, 1875 IN HORN, HOLLAND. IN 1880 AT THE AGE OF FIVE, HER FAMILY CAME TO THE U.S. AND SETTLED IN CARROLL COUNTY, IOWA. IN 1883 THE LUNDERS FAMILY HOMESTEADED NORTH OF SALEM IN LAKE COUNTY. DURING ANNA'S LIFETIME SHE EXPERIENCED ALL FORMS OF TRANSPORTATION. HAVING COME TO AMERICA BY SHIP, TRAVELED TO IOWA AND DAKOTA BY COVERED WAGON DRIVEN BY OXEN, HORSE AND BUGGY DAYS, CAR, BUS, TRAIN, AND AIRPLANE. MRS HULS DIED MAY 28, 1958, JUST FOUR MONTHS AFTER HER HUSBAND. WILLIAM AND ANNA HULS WERE MARRIED IN THE OLD ST MARYS CHURCH, JUNE 20, 1893 BY FR WEIXELBERGER, THE SECOND RESIDENT PRIEST IN THE COMMUNITY AND IMMEDIATE PREDECESSOR OF MSGR. WEBER. IN THEIR NEARLY 65 YEARS OF MARRIAGE THEY EXPERIENCED MANY OF THE GOOD TIMES AS WELL AS THE HARDSHIPS OF THE EARLY PIONEERS. THERE WERE NUMBERED AMONG THE NEWLYWEDS THAT HELPED TO BUILD OUR PRESENT CHURCH FOR WHICH THEY WERE ALWAYS PROUD TO HAVE HELPED CONSTRUCT SUCH A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO OUR LORD. LATER THEY CONTRIBUTED MUCH TOWARD BUILDING OF THE FORMER GRADE SCHOOL, CONVENT, FORMER HIGH SCHOOL AND ST MARYS HALL. THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF 15 CHILDREN, AND ADOPTED AN ADDITIONAL SON. ALL OF THE WILLIAM HULS CHILDREN BELONGED TO THE CATHOLIC ORDER OF FORESTERS. WILLIAM WAS AN ACTIVE PROMOTER BUT COULD NOT BELONG BECAUSE OF HIS HEALTH. HE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE EARLY ROMAN CATHOLIC MUTUAL PROTECTIVE SOCIETY OF THIS PARISH. ANNA WAS AN EARLY MEMBER OF THE CHRISTIAN MOTHERS. EVERY MEMBER OF THE HULS FAMILY ATTENDED ST MARYS BOARDING SCHOOL. MANY OF THE SONS AND GRANDSONS HAVE BEEN ACOLYTES, LECTORS, LAY MINISTERS, CCD TEACHERS, AND LAY BOARD MEMBERS, AS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE WELFARE OF THE PARISH. THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN AT LEAST ONE MEMBER OF THIS FAMILY IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM, NOW INTO THE FOURTH GENERATION. AT THE PRESENT TIME, NETTIE OYEN HOLDS THE DISTINCTION OF HAVING ONE GRANDSON AND TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL. MINNIE FETERL HAS A GREAT GRANDSON IN SCHOOL, ADAM STIEFVATER. JOE, AL, AND BOB ALSO HAVE GRANDCHILDREN ATTENDING. THEY ARE DON, BRENDA, AND SCOTT OYEN, NANCY HULS, MICHAEL LAUCK, AND SCOTT HULS. MANY MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY HAVE MOVED TO OTHER PARISHES AND HAVE BEEN ACTIVELY CARRYING OUT THE TRADITION OF OUR ST MARYS PARISH THAT WE ARE CELEBRATING AT THIS CENTENNIAL.
