Notes
a. Note:   Joseph and Agnes Heying immigrated to the United States around 1843 per the obituary of their daughter Catherine which states "Catherine Heying was born June 26, 1841 in Germany, coming to America at the age of two years, the family settling at New Vienna, IA." Their second child, Henry, was born in Indiana in January 1845, indicating that they possibly settled in Indiana for a time, or was just passing through Indiana on their way to Iowa. (January would probably not be a good time to be traveling through Indiana, especially with the available means of transportation in 1845.) Per their son Henry's obituary, the Heying's lived in Indiana for two years before moving to New Vienna, Iowa. "Henry Heying, who died last week, was a native of Indiana where he was born in 1845. When two years old he moved with his parents to New Vienna, Iowa where he grew up to manhood." The 1850 census shows Joseph and Agnes HARGING (HEYING) farming in District 7 Township, Dubuque County, Iowa. They have 3 children; Catherine 6, (born in Germany), Henry 3, (born in Indiana), and John 1 (born in Iowa ). Also living with the HEYINGS is Agnes HINKLE, 73, who was born in Germany (Mother-in-law). 1850 Census -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date Of Census: 1 OCT 1850 Location: DISTRICT 7, DUBUQUE COUNTY, IOWA Census location: Real estate value: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Age Sex Profession Place Born -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HARGING, JOSEPH 37 M FARMER GERMANY HARGING, AGNES 38 F GERMANY HARGING, CATHERINE 6 F GERMANY HARGING, HENRY 3 M INDIANA HARGING, JOHN 1 M IOWA HINKLE, AGNES 73 F GERMANY -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1860 census shows Joseph and Agnes HEINK (HEYING) farming in Liberty Township, Dubuque County, Iowa. Their post office is New Vienna, Iowa. Living with Joseph and Agnes is Agnes MEYER (MAIER) 85 years old, no relation given but believed to be Agnes Heying's mother. The census indicates that Catherine (Katie), was born in Oldenberg, Germany in 1847, the rest of the children were born in the U.S. This would indicate that the HEYINGS immigrated to the U.S. between 1843 and 1847. 1860 Census -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date Of Census: JUN 1860 Location: LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, DUBUQUE COUNTY, IOWA Census location: T563 #320, PAGE 110, LINE 9 Real estate value: Personal property value: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Age Sex Profession Place Born -------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEINK, JOSEPH 46 M FARMER OLDENBURG HEINK, AGNES 47 F OLDENBURG HEINK, CATHARINE 17 F OLDENBURG HEINK, HENRY 14 M IOWA HEINK, JOHN 12 M IOWA HEINK, MARY 10 F IOWA HEINK, JOSEPH 7 M IOWA HEINK, BERNARD 5 M IOWA HEINK, SOPHIA 2 F IOWA HEUGIL, HENRY 19 M FARM LABORER MEYER, AGNES 85 F OLDENBURG -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1870 census shows the HEYINGS farming in Liberty Township, Dubuque County, Iowa.
