Notes
a. Note:   Article taken from "100 Years Of Faith 1885-1985" published by St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, South Dakota in 1985. Henry Hipschman was born in Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin July 18, 1872. He came to Sioux Falls and then came to Salem, SD. He worked in Kuhle's saloon for a few years. Then in about 1918 or so after prohibition he bought the place known as Hipschman's Tavern, which is still in operation. (later turned into a museum) Henry married Elizabeth Engel. She was born in Carroll, Iowa, March 20, 1877, the daughter of Arnold and Mary Elizabeth (Ottie) Engel. They were married by Fr. Bernard Weber November 27, 1900. Lizzie, as she was known to her friends, was a seamstress, and went out sewing for families weeks at a time. Five children were born to this union: Alvin, Louise, Albert, Heinie, and Margaret. Alvin was a partner with his father in the tavern. Albert married Hazel Masters and they had three children, Donald, Mary, and Paul. Louise and Margaret never were married and still live in the family home. Heinie married Antonella Bies and they had five children.
