a. Note:   The following information was obtained from the Homestead papers filed by Maria Anna Lammers for the North East quarter of Section 5 in Township 102 N. of Range 55 W. This land is physically located on the southwest corner of an intersection located 3 miles west of Salem, South Dakota on Highway 38 and three miles south on road 438 (intersection of 438 and 256). November 1, 1886 -- Maria Anna Lammers makes application to be a citizen of the United States. She indicates that she was born in Saxony, on or about the year 1857; that she emigrated to the United States and landed at the port of New York on or about the month of April in 1882. She renounces forever all allegiances and fidelity to any foreign Prince, State or Sovereignty, and in particular to Emperor William. November 4, 1886 -- Maria Anna Lammers nee Heumiller pays the sum of $13.92 for application #28172 on a Homestead on the North East quarter of Section 5 in Township 102N of Range 55 W. She indicates that she is a widow and that settlement on the said land commenced on October 25, 1882. Since that time improvements made on the property consist of a frame house and about 85 acres broken. She gives a value of $500 for the land and improvements. May 16, 1893 -- Maria Anna Raue, formerly Maria Anna Lammers, gives notice of her intention to make final Homestead proof to establish her claim on July 8, 1893. She lists four possible witnesses: George Schneider, Christ Preshun, Henrich Gottlob, and Casper M. Neher � she must bring at least two of the witnesses to testify in her behalf when making her final proof. July 8, 1893 -- Maria Anna Raue, formerly Maria Anna Lammers, age 36, is a witness in her own behalf to support Homestead entry #28172. She indicates that a frame house, 14 x 20, was built on the land on November 2, 1882. Other improvements consist of a 16 x 16 barn and shed, a granary, a well, 1/4 acre of trees, 15 acres in wire fence, and 110 acres broken and under cultivation. She indicates that she and her six children live on the property. Heinrich Gottlob, age 52, and Christ Presuhn, age 36, also give testimony and witness to the fact that the provisions of the Homestead Act have been properly met. Both witnesses indicate that Maria Anna Raue is married and lives on the said property.
