Note: Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota, Thursday, May 9, 1940 John Augustine died at St. Joseph�s hospital in Mitchell, SD at five o�clock Tuesday morning, May 7, 1940, after an illness of one week. He was taken ill very suddenly and when brought to the hospital it was determined that his appendix had ruptured. An operation was performed but proved to be too late. The remains were brought to Salem Tuesday and this (Thursday) morning after a short prayer service at the Triso funeral home, were taken to St. Mary�s Catholic church where the requiem mass was sung by Rt. Rev. B. Weber. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery, the pall bearers being Frank H. Kolbeck, Fred Blankartz, Pierre Kugener, J.C. Glass, Harry Reif, and William Oyen. Mr. Augustine was born at Dyersville, Iowa on September 9, 1881 and was 58 years, seven months and 28 days old when he died. About 30 years ago he came to Salem and most of the time since then has worked in this neighborhood or elsewhere in the county. For the last four years he has been working for Cliff Hart, near Spencer. He was a quiet, retiring gentleman, who was liked by everyone. He is survived by three brothers, Henry and Frank Augustine, of Dyersville, Iowa and E.G. Augustine, of Geddes, SD; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Roling of Salem, Mrs. Mary Dress of Dyersville, Iowa, and Mrs. Kate Fibbs, of Sioux City.
